Devonshires recovers substantial damages for the family of Mrs Margaret Redfern

Thursday, 20 October 2011

Devonshires has recovered substantial damages for the family of Mrs Margaret Redfern, who was misdiagnosed as suffering from inflammation of the bowel by Somerset Primary Care Trust when she was, in fact, suffering from bowel cancer. She received treatment at Shepton Mallett Treatment Centre in August 2007, but the cancer was not diagnosed.

It was not until she was admitted to Bath’s Royal United Hospital that she was told that she was suffering from colorectal cancer.  A course of chemo-radiotherapy was recommended, but Mrs Redfern became very frail and died on 11 October 2008.

Colorectal cancer, commonly known as bowel cancer, is a cancer caused by uncontrolled cell growth.  It starts in the lining of the bowel and if left untreated, as it was in this case, it can grow into the muscle layers underneath, and then through the bowel wall.  Once the cancer has spread, the chances of survival disappear. If the cancer had been diagnosed in August 2007, Mrs Redfern would have been able to undergo surgery and chemotherapy and could have made a total recovery.
